FAQ

How much will the camp cost?
Attendance is free! The AI Safety Research Program is funded by the Long Term Future Fund.

Can I get my travel costs reimbursed?
There is a budget for reimbursing travel costs of low-income participants. Please state in your application form if you require financial support for travel costs.

Who should apply?
The intended participants are mostly students and early career researchers wanting to work on AI safety, people switching careers, or coming from unusual backgrounds. Participants should have some familiarity with one or more fields relevant to AI safety or strategy.

How much time will I need to put in before the camp?
There is an online preparation phase before the camp. The required time differs between teams, but we suggest spending at least one full day per week on camp preparation.

How much time will I need to put in after the camp?
There is no official requirement and it depends on your team. Chances are that your team will want to spend some time in remote collaboration to write up their results in a publishable form. While this is possible during the camp time, most groups find it difficult to complete both the research and writing aspects of their project. We will provide additional mentoring and coaching to each team.

Can I work on other things during the camp time?
We ask participants to free up their schedule such that they can fully focus on the camp while they are at the location.

I can only join for a part of the time. Is that okay?
It’s best to be present for the entire duration of the camp. There is no fixed rule for how many days one can miss while still making significant contributions to their team, but we will prefer applicants who can be present for the whole event.

Can I join more than one team?
No, you won’t be able to participate in two teams at the same time. However, you’re very welcome to give feedback to another team or discuss their topic in the off-work time.

Can I participate without joining a team?
The idea of the camp is to enable collaborators to come together, so the choice of a team is crucial to the camp experience.
