When will the camp take place?
26th April – 5th May, 2019
The camp will start on Friday evening and end in early afternoon on Sunday
Where will the camp take place?
In Fontecruz Avila Golf Club, roughly hour and half away from Madrid, Spain. Transport from Madrid will be provided by shuttle bus.
How much will the camp cost?
Attendance is free! The costs for accommodation and catering are covered by our sponsors. Participants will have to pay for travelling to and from Madrid.
Can I get my travel costs reimbursed?
There will be a budget for reimbursing travel costs of low-income participants. The exact conditions will depend on our funding situation. Please state in your application form if you require financial support for travel costs.
What to expect?
7- week preparation in form of an online study group followed by a 9-day intensive full-time camp with the aim of creating and publishing a research paper. We expect most of the groups will continue to collaborate after the camp to finish their projects.
Who should apply?
The intended participants are mostly students and early career researchers wanting to work on AI safety, people switching careers, or coming from unusual backgrounds. Participants should have some familiarity with one or more fields relevant to AI safety or strategy.
How much time will I need to put in before the camp?
There is a 6-7 weeks preparation phase before the camp. The required time differs between teams, but we suggest spending at least one full day per week on camp preparation.
How much time will I need to put in after the camp?
There is no official requirement and it depends on your team. Chances are that your team will want to spend some time in remote collaboration to write up their results in a publishable form. While this is possible during the camp time, most groups find it difficult to complete both the research and writing aspects of their project.
Can I work on other things during the camp time?
We ask participants to free up their schedule such that they can fully focus on the camp while they are at the location.
I can only join for a part of the time. Is that okay?
It’s best to be present for the entire duration of the camp. There is no fixed rule for how many days one can miss while still making significant contributions to their team, but we will prefer applicants who can be present for the whole event. If you can’t make it for the full duration, contact us.
Can I join more than one team?
No, you won’t be able to participate in two teams at the same time. However, you’re very welcome to give feedback to another team or discuss their topic in the off-work time.
Can I participate without joining a team?
The idea of the camp is to enable collaborators to come together, so the choice of a team is crucial to the camp experience.
